Privacy policy

Rico is a study app made by Dibble Me, LLC, an Oregon company (“we”). It doesn’t sell or share information about you, and it has no accounts, ads or tracking. Analytics are off unless you choose to share them.
What stays with you
- Your courses and progress (cards, reviews, schedules, exam dates and settings) are stored on your device. If you’re signed in to iCloud, Rico keeps them in sync across your devices through your own private iCloud database. Apple holds that data under its privacy policy; we can’t see it.
- Files you open or share. A
.ricofile you share (or a.pollyfile, from before the app was renamed) goes only where you send it. It contains the course, never your progress. - Microphone and speech. On pronunciation cards, Rico listens only while you’re saying your answer and transcribes it on your device to check what you said. Audio is not recorded, kept or sent anywhere.
When Rico goes online
- Sync uses Apple’s iCloud (CloudKit), as above.
- Studio’s free-media search (on the Mac) sends your search words to the open libraries you’re searching, such as Openverse, Wikimedia Commons and NASA, and downloads what you pick. Those services’ own policies apply.
- Importing a spreadsheet from a link downloads that link.
- Map cards show Apple Maps, which loads map tiles from Apple.
- The first pronunciation card in a language may download Apple’s on-device speech model for it. After that, listening works offline.
- Help Improve Rico, only if you turn it on (below).
If you choose to help improve Rico
When you first open Rico, it asks whether you’d like to help improve it, with two buttons: Share and Don’t Share. (If you used Rico before this question existed, it asks once, at the end of a session.) Nothing is counted, stored or sent unless you tap Share, and you can change your mind any time in Settings. Sharing is only for people 16 and older. When it’s on, the device sends:
- A summary of each week (each day in TestFlight builds), worked out on the device from your own study on that device: how many days and minutes you studied, how many cards you reviewed and remembered, how well Rico’s predictions matched what happened, how long cards took to stick, which features you used (counts only), crash and speed counts, your Rico settings, the app version, device type, OS version and language. For courses Rico publishes, it also counts which cards are missed or flagged most.
- Answers to occasional questions, and comments if you choose to write one. Rico removes what looks like an email address or phone number before sending; please don’t include personal details.
Summaries never include course content, course titles, your answers, flag notes, search words, file names or your iCloud identity. Each summary carries a code that only your device can work out, so Rico can’t connect one summary to another or to you. Your IP address is used to deliver the request and isn’t stored.
The data goes to Rico’s own service, hosted by Cloudflare (our processor) in the EU, and is used only to improve Rico. It isn’t sold, shared or used for advertising. Summaries are deleted after 13 months and comments after 12; totals counted from them may be kept.
You can turn this off at any time, and anything waiting to be sent is discarded at once. Delete What I’ve Shared (in Settings, under Help Improve Rico) deletes everything this device has sent. Our legal basis in the EU and UK is your consent; where the law asks for an even choice, the two buttons look alike.
This website
getrico.app has no cookies, analytics or trackers. It’s hosted by Cloudflare, which handles each request (including your IP address) to deliver the page and protect the site, under its own privacy policy. If you email us, we use your message only to answer it.
If you join the beta, we keep your email address and the day you joined, nothing else, and use it only to send your beta invite and tell you when Rico launches. It’s stored with Cloudflare, and the emails are sent through Resend, our email provider. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and if you write to us we’ll delete your address. We never sell or share it.
Children
Rico asks no one for personal information. Help Improve Rico is only for people 16 and older; where Apple tells apps that age rules apply, only people whose declared age range is 18 or older are asked. Anyone younger is never asked, and nothing is sent.
